Showcasing History, One Step at a Time
At More Vang, we thrive on storytelling. When our long-time client, Thurgood Marshall Academy, approached us with a new idea– a history timeline exhibit–we were thrilled for the opportunity to help!
Thurgood Marshall Academy (TMA), a college-preparatory public charter high school in Washington, D.C., is dedicated to providing a world-class education to every child. Founded in 2001, the school has much to celebrate and share as they strive to fulfill their mission.
The TMA team approached us with an idea and a timeline location. Like all installation projects, we had to work within the physical constraints of the space while figuring out how to optimize the design. The location selected for this timeline was their main stairwell. This posed a challenge as the images had to be installed following the same angle as the stairs. We also had to make thoughtful material selection and installation choices to ensure the graphics would hold up in such a high traffic area where students will interact with the art.

Beginning with a comprehensive site survey, we obtained precise measurements for the staircase width. With measurements, our graphics team mocked up layout design options for the TMA team to review. At the same time as design decisions, we determined acrylic panels would work best for the exhibit mounting flush onto the wall. Acrylic is modern, durable and compliments their design vision.
The process to plan the space ahead of time made the file art creation process much more efficient. Scale and orientation was nuanced in order to match the angle of the stairs. With a layout selected, the TMA designers could set up the artwork.Using the pre-designed template, their designers could easily and accurately set up images and copy to fit the space.

With over 60 panels of varying sizes and shapes, individual installation would be complex. To simplify the process, we crafted stencils, guaranteeing perfect placement and spacing for each timeline panel.
The final installation includes 120 pieces of acrylic printed and installed to create a 25ft collage that tells the rich history of the Thurgood Marshall Academy.
Most important to any project, our client was excited with the end result.
“We can’t thank the More Vang Team enough for their efforts to get this timeline created and installed. It looks wonderful and will be appreciated by many for years to come! I am grateful for your contributions to this project. Kudos”
